Sisterhood | November 1, 2016

Some of you may be familiar with the picture of our Alpha Chapter…the original 21 Tri Delta members. The iconic group photograph was taken in May 1889. Sarah Ida Shaw, president of the fledgling organization, wanted there to be no doubt who they were, so she cut out three large cardboard deltas (perhaps the first version of wooden letters) and placed them on the dark skirts of Bertha Brackett, Florence Steward and Mattie Carter. Della Badger created a Trident and is standing front of it. A crocheted purse ornament with silver beads hides the sport where the Trident’s cardboard showed a crack.

As we reflect on the founding of Tri Delta throughout the month of November, think about the details and meaning behind our Ritual. Think about the friendship and the commitment our four Founders made on Thanksgiving Eve 128 years ago that then led to 21 members which has now led to more than 200,000.

Whether you are hosting a Founders’ Day celebration or not, we hope you find the resources below useful. View our Event resource when logged in to My Tri Delta.

We encourage you to attend a local Founders’ Day celebration if you can. Regardless, we hope you still connect with us and other Tri Deltas online by using #DDD128 to see the celebrations across North America and the world!
